The Chapel (Capitol Hill, Seattle WA)

This place is all atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere! On the corner of Melrose and Pine, they have great ambient music that's played, white high-backed seats and booths, chandalabras, walls of mirrors and windows (it looks twice as big as it is), and a super-high, thick white bar with super-high stools. It definately is a very stunning place!

This excerpt taken from their website:
The Chapel was built in the early 1920s inside the Butterworth's Mortuary. It was a place to honor life in the physical world and the passing into the spiritual world. While the mortuary no longer exists, the former chapel continues to bring people together to honor one another — in the physical world, yes, but perhaps also to ponder the spiritual world in a convivial atmosphere.
Chapel is more than a bar, more than a restaurant. Fine food and exceptional spirits are served in a unique space where people, music, art, architecture and ideas intersect and mix.
I couldn't have said it better myself. A very unique dining experience!

Specializing in Martinis and Fu-Fu drinks, but also with some beers on tap including Leffe and others. They run a limited happy hour everyday from 5-8, but it's usually just on the Martinis. They have at least 2 whole pages of special house martinis!

I had a Leffe (I was in the mood)- A good all-around Belgian-style beer, lighter in taste, flavor, and heaviness than most Belgians. A good staple beer.

I also had to have a martini! I tried The Color Purple- Fruity, Raspberry flavors, but not too sweet like some martinis get! It was more like eating a piece of fruit. Very juicy, sweet, slightly tart to offset the sweetness with a slight alcohol taste. I'll give it an A- not usually into Fu-Fu drinks, but it was really good.

Their food is more like tapas, and is very good for munchies. They have a unique blend of ingrediants and everything tastes very fresh. Lots of flatbreads, tapas appetizers, and paninis.

We split:
Mac and Cheese- Just a normal Mac and Cheese- not too cheesy, with a baked cheese and bread crumb crust. It was tasty, but could be better- creamier, cheesier, richer (add blue cheese?). I'll give it a B.
Prochutto Flat Bread- With a truffle oil base, a mozz cheese blend, blue cheese crumbles, and strips of fresh basil. This one was very tasty and I kept taking small nibbles with my drink. Very full flavored and well rounded, definately an A!
It wasn't too busy when we went, and we experienced great service! If you've never been, you should definately go!

  1. It's hard to find a good mac'n'cheese in a restaurant. I'd say the same for a good apple pie. Most places can do these pretty basically, C to B grade, but it doesn't seem like many kitchens are interested in taking an old American classic and giving it a bit of pep, a bit of va-va-voom.

Add hamburgers to that list. There's a difference between slopping three pounds of junk on a burger and making a good burger.

  2. Out here we have BOMB mack and cheese- like the "Mack daddy" mac n cheez. Like lobster baked four cheese mac with crumb topping, or dungeness crab baked mac n cheese with parm topping. Or red pepper. Delicious- and I'm not usually into pastas!
Haven't seen many pies out here...
Hamburgers... They have a one pound, 4 cheese, thick cut peppered bacon, blue cheese stuffed burger with fried egg, fried onion rings, chipotle aioli, lettuce, tomato, pickles and jalapenos. Eat it rare. Heart attack on a bun. How about that?
